Have you seen that girl walk in with an Insta-worthy diaper cake at a baby shower and thought to yourself “damn, that looks fancy”?
As in “too fancy” for you to make. Well, I’m here to tell you that if you can use basic office supplies like rubber bands, tape, and a stapler…you too can make a fancy diaper cake.
Supplies:
- About 64 diapers, no worries if the box has more than that! (And please please please get the brand the mom-to-be has requested, even if you don’t agree)
- Bag of 100 rubber bands
- 6 yards of ribbon
- Stapler
- Hot glue gun (optional)
- Paper towel roll
- Small cute stuffed animal for topper
- 18 in foam board & aluminum foil
OR Large circular tray
The How To:
1. Wrap the foam board in aluminum foil, and tape it across the bottom, flip over and place towel roll in the middle standing up.
2. Take diapers out of package and roll 34 diapers, securing each with a rubber band. Place in circle around paper towel roll to make first layer. Dependent on size of diapers, you could need between 28 and 34 diapers.
3. Once it looks mostly like the first layer, wrap ribbon around the layer which will help shape it. Once you pull it tight, staple the ribbon together in the back (you can totally hot glue it later and take out the staple if you want, but honestly, no one will notice the staple).
When it’s pulled tight you may need to add in another rolled diaper to fill out the circle.
4. Repeat for the second layer with about 15-18 diapers. And the third layer with about 6-8 diapers.
5. Stick your stuffed animal in the top, and wah-la, you have a diaper cake!
6. If you want you can add decor around the bottom layer, or sitting on the different layers.
Little toys, print outs, mardi gras beads, or even some paper flowers can make for easy jazz-up decor.
How “extra” you want to be, is completely up to you! I’ve found the jazzier the ribbon is, the more exciting the diaper cake looks.
Decorating Hacks for the semi-crafty:
I personally could not find the ribbon I had envisioned for this Star Wars creations so I elected to get creative.
I found very “outer space” sparkly black ribbon, but it was very sheer. So I used glue dots (but you can also use small drops of hot glue) to glue the sparkly black on top of the regular black for the 1st and 3rd layer.
For the middle layer I made “May the Fourth Be With You” (the mom’s due date was May 4th) by using heat transfer vinyl cut with my Cricut.
See? Easy peasy! What kind of diaper cake will you make for the next mom-to-be in your life?
